SANTA MARIA DEL MAR

Seen from the outside, the church has a solid robust appearance. The predominance of horizontal lines and the plain walls without openings or decoration is almost complete. The main façade is delimited by two towers of octagonal shape, the same shape that is repeated in the columns of the interior and the two large buttresses that flank the rosewindow, translating the breadth of the interior vault.

The interior contrast extraordinarily with the foregoing description: it is in a monumental Gothic style, but with an exceptional conception of space. There are hardly any dead angles. The church has a nave and two aisles, an ambulatory, bat no transept. The nave and aisles are formed by four sections and the presbytery is formed by a half section and a seven-sided polygon, the whole covered with fanvaulting and topped with magnificent keystones.

The nave is lighted by bull’s eyes set between the terraces of the nave and the aisles. The church features excellent acoustic conditions, making it an ideal place for concerts. In addition to classical and oriental music, even jazz performances have been given here on occasion.
