SAGRADA FAMILIA

Of all the Modernista Buildings that can be visited in Barcelona and of all the buildings of Barcelona as a whole, the basilica of the Sagrada Familia is doubtless the one with the greatest symbolic value and the foremost ambassador of the city throughout the world. Designed by the genial architect Antoni Gaudí, the Sagrada Familia was sponsored by private initiative.

The bookseller José María Bocabella, founder of the Spirtual Association of Devotees of St. Joseph’s, had the idea of achieving, through St. Joseph’s intercession, the triumph of the Church in a period of dechristianization fostered by the industrial revolution an the far-reaching social changes.

The importance of the Sagrada Familia is twofold: on the one hand, it may be considered a Bible in stone, since the symbols that have already been sculpted and the future ones will present the entire Catholic credo, and on the other, it is the building by Antoni Gaudi that best expresses his way of doing things, since here he applied all the structural solutions that he studied and used over the course of his lifetime.
