The Lleó Morera house was built between the years 1902 and 1906 by Lluis Domènech i Montaner under commission from Francesca Morera. This building was awarded the first prize for architecture by the City Council of Barcelona in 1906. In reality it involves the reform of a pre-existing structure. Here it may be observed that, as opposed to Gaudí’s boundless imagination and the anarchic tendency of his shapes, Domènech i Montaner focused in rationalism and spatial order. He was the renaissance man of the Catalan Modernisme movement.
The Lleó Morera house is characterized by beautiful façade in the Neo-Gothic style, which is topped by a balustrade that is reminiscent of the great medieval churches. The house’s façade is lavishly decorated with balconies and windows divided by pilasters. Standing out on the second floor are some female figures that are holding the most advances technological innovations of the times, such as a camera, a light bulb and a telephone.
The Lleó Morera house is a crowned by a beautiful lookout tower, which is a typical feature of the structures built in that period.
