The Palau de la Musica Catalana is considered one of the foremost concert alls in the world. Its designer was Lluis Domenech i Montaner, whi constructed this majestic Art Nouveau building between 1905 and 1908 at the confluence of Via Laietana and Carrer Sant Pere Més Alt. Catalonia’s wealtht merchant class commissioned Domènech i Montaner to build the Palau in the context of the rebirth of Catalan culture that was stirred by the Renaixença movement.

Its exterior is surprising and even more so considering the place where the building is located: the quaint old district of Sant Pere. The materials alternate harmoniously in the exterior in a combination of brick, stone, glass, ceramics and wrought-iron. Nowhere, however, is a continuous wall be seen, the true prominence is left to the interior of the Palau.
The entrance is located on the chamfered corner of the building and above it, welcoming visitors, in the sculptural group called “The Catalan Folk Song” by Miguel Blay, which is complemented on either side by the busts of Bach, Beethoven, Palesrina and Wagner, together with diverse mosaics, notably including the one that Lluis Bru dedicated to the Orfeó Català.
