The initial parts of this “modernista” structure were carried out between the years 1902 and 1911 when the central pavilion, two wxamination pavilions, the surgery pavilion and six nursing pavilions were built. Between 1911 and 1930, four more nursing pavilions were added, as well as the central pavilions for religious communties and those for the kitchens and the pharmacy, and other auxiliary appurtenances.
Adjacent to the kitchen pavilion, the façade of the church of Santa Maria (18th century) by Carles Grau, was rebuilt. This church stood in the Old Town until it was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century to make way for the Via Laietana. The Modernista pavilions were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1978 and world Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
