Is the heart of Barcelona. This is a prominent shopping and entertainment area and the hub of several important streets: The Ramblas, Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya and Portal de l’Angel, where large numbers of Bacelonans and visitors are always to be seen.
The square dates from the beginning of the 20th century, when the fields outside the city wall began to be enjoyed by the people as a place of leisure. Its final construction tool place between 1925 and 1927, when an esplanade of 800 x 400 metres eas developed to act as a link between the Old Town and the Eixample. 
Its architect was Francesc Nebot, who was also the designer of the Telefonica building that stands by the square.
The round plan of Plaça de Catalunya includes a central area, which is a meeting place for Barcelonans. It is a marked by two symmetrical fountains and a sculpture group. Another point of interest on this square is the monument to Francesc Macià, by Josep Subirachs, which has the curious shape of an inverted stairway and “Godess” by Josep Clarà.
