The Antoni Tapies Foundation was created in 1984 by the artist Antoni Tapies to promote the study and knowledge of the modern and contemporary art. To that end, the Foundation opened its doors in June 1990 in the building that had once been the headquarters of the publishing house Editorial Montaner i Simon, designed by the Modernista architect Luis Domenech i Montaner. This building, which was constructed between the years 1880 and 1885, is one of the best examples of the architectural and urban renewal of the Modernista Barcelona. The splendid brick façade is crowned by the sculpture “Núvol i cadira” (Cloud and Chair), made by Antoni Tàpies in 1990.
